In 1945, US and Japanese armies met on Iwo Jima island of. A few decades later, hundreds of letters were extracted from this arid land, finally to give a name, a face, a voice to these men and their extraordinary commander. Japanese soldiers were sent to Iwo Jima knew that their chances of survival were almost nil. There were among them a baker named Saigo, who only dreamed of seeing his new city born; an Olympic champion, Baron Nishi; Shimizu, a young former military policeman whose war had not yet begun idealism; and Lieutenant Ito, pure and hard military who would have preferred suicide to reissue. Their leader was General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, who travels to the United States had learned that the war was lost in advance, but had also taught own tactics to delay the advance of the vast American armada deployed in the Pacific. Driven by a relentless will, Kuribayashi ingeniously exploited the terrain, turning the flash predicted defeat in 40 days of fighting heroic.
